The new online format of the CFA Level 1 Exam is offered in four windows each year; for the remainder of 2021, those are July, August, and November (excluding February exam since it has already been administered). The CFA Institute allows candidates to take as much time as needed to complete all three levels of the CFA program. If you are a finance professional interested in sitting for the CFA Exam, you must meet specific requirements:

  • Have a bachelor’s degree or be in the final year of obtaining a bachelor’s degree
  • Possess four years of relevant work experience
  • Have a combination of four years of education and work experience

Once you’ve completed the following CFA Exam requirements, you are ready to schedule your CFA Level 1 Exam.

Scheduling the CFA Level 1 Exam

There are two steps required to schedule the CFA Exam. The first is to enroll in the CFA Exam through the CFA Institute’s website. You move onto the second step once you have completed the registration process and your payment has been processed. Then, you will see a link to “schedule your exam” within your registration dashboard. The tool used to schedule the CFA Exam is part of the Prometric Testing Centers.

The Prometric scheduling tool will navigate you to available testing centers to choose your preferred testing center with the dates and times that work best for you. Once you’ve scheduled your exam, you will receive a confirmation from Prometric stating that you have been scheduled for the CFA Exam. If you do not receive a confirmation email, you are most likely not scheduled and should contact Prometric directly.

Even though Prometric will work with you to schedule your CFA Exam, the CFA Institute will continue to be your resource for information about the exam. You will also receive reminders and mock exams as you get closer to your exam date.

According to the CFA Institute, you should only contact CFA about your exam date if:

  • You are not able to access your account or need to update your account information.
  • Have general questions about the CFA Exam.

CFA Institute’s Tips for Scheduling the CFA Level 1 Exam

If you want to schedule your exam at a specific Prometric test center location, consider scheduling it as soon as you decide to take the exam. All testing center locations and seats for the CFA Exam are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. If you don’t get your desired Prometric testing center location, always check back because seats are added to testing centers often.

When searching for testing locations, make sure that you filter by both city and country. Searching with those parameters allows you to view more choices of Prometric testing centers than you would see when just searching by country. Also, be sure to change the date range in your search to see other options available to your desired testing date.

Changing a Scheduled CFA Exam

It is possible to change your scheduled exam, but keep in mind that you must make the change within your current exam window. There is no way to switch to a new testing window. Note that the fee to change your scheduled CFA Exam is $25.00 US.

Rescheduling a CFA Exam

If you find yourself needing to reschedule your CFA Exam completely, try to reschedule it before your exam window deadline. Any reschedules must go through your CFA candidate tile.

Deferring a CFA Level 1 Exam

CFA candidates are only allowed to defer their CFA Exam on a case-by-case basis. The CFA Institute’s deferment considerations are based on the following events that impact the candidate or a member of the candidate’s immediate family:

  • government, employer, or university travel restriction due to COVID-19 that prevents a candidate from attending the exam (documentation required)
  • a positive COVID test within 60 days of the candidate’s scheduled exam appointment (documentation required)
  • life-threatening illness (candidate or immediate family member) in the exam window
  • death of a candidate’s immediate family member
  • mandatory military service (candidate only) in the exam window
  • pregnancy (candidate only)
  • natural disaster (candidate’s local area)

Canceling a CFA Level 1 Exam

The CFA Institute will allow CFA candidates to withdraw or cancel their CFA exams. CFA candidates can request a withdrawal of their exam registration until five days before the beginning of their exam window. Unfortunately, if you withdraw or cancel your CFA Exam, you will not receive a refund for the enrollment and registration fees. These fees will also not be deferred or transferred to another CFA exam.

Also, if you don’t withdraw your registration within the required time of five days before the beginning of the exam window, you’ll be unable to re-register for the next exam until the results of the current exam have been released.

You can find information about rescheduling, deferring, and canceling the CFA Exam on the CFA Institute’s website.
